Building a startup is not the same as building software. You can ship beautiful code and still flop if you solve the wrong problem. Before you start writing features or hiring developers, slow down and ask the right questions.
These three questions help you validate faster and build smarter.
1. Who Is This For, Really?
Don’t say “anyone who...” Instead, define your user by:
- Their role or identity
- Their top 2 or 3 pain points
- What they’re currently doing instead of using your product
If you can’t clearly describe your audience, your product will end up speaking to no one.
2. What Will This Help Them Do Right Now?
Features aren’t value. Outcomes are. Instead of listing what your tool does, ask: “What does this let my user accomplish faster, easier, or better than before?”
Real example: “Saves time setting appointments” is better than “Syncs with Google Calendar.”
3. Can I Test This Without a Full Build?
Use landing pages, mockups, or manual processes to test demand. Collect real feedback. Ask for email signups or even pre-orders. If no one engages, a polished product won’t fix that.
Bonus: Test Urgency, Not Just Interest
It’s easy to say “That sounds cool.” It’s harder to click “Buy.” Try validation tactics that force real user behavior. That’s how you know they care.
Less Code, More Clarity
You’re not falling behind by slowing down. You’re building a product that users actually need. That’s what matters.
